With touring sides having to travel by boat before thL
era of air flight, Wigan were still without their Great Britain tourists Jim
Sullivan, Johnny Ring, Tommy Howley, Danny Hurcombe and Jack Price for the
opening few weeks of this season. This visit of Swinton was the first game
of the campaign and they inflicted Wigan's first defeat at Central Park in
27 matches since a loss to St Helens Recreation in March 1923. Entwistle and
Halsall scored for Swinton with Attie van Heerden replying for Wigan. His
brother Nicholas made his debut on the opposite wing in this match.
