These sides were 2nd and 3rd in the league table heading
into this Lancashire Cup Final at Salford. It was a tight opening with Leigh
being unlucky not to score an early try, Mooney was deemed to have a foot in
touch before going over. Leigh did get a 2-0 lead though with a penalty goal
from Mooney. Jim Sullivan retaliated with a levelling penalty goal before
errors from Leigh contributed to very quick back to back tries for Johnny
Ring and Bert Webster. Leigh had made a bright start but all of a sudden
they were 8-2 down and they really never recovered their composure. Tommy
Howley then returned a Leigh kick for a try, which put Wigan into a 13-2
half time lead. Sullivan added another penalty goal after half time for
15-2, after which Leigh did try to rally but to no avail. Webster's second
try rounded off the scoring for Wigan in a 20-2 win. "After such a promising
start, Leigh's big defeat was astounding" claimed one newspaper. Wigan had
sealed their fifth Lancashire Cup success.
