This 1st v 2nd clash at Watersheddings left 25,000 spectators "disappointed" with "penalty after penalty" leading to a match that wasn't in "keeping with the exalted positions of the clubs". With a Top 4 play off system the result wasn't that important towards the league championship but up until 1969 the "Lancashire League" trophy was awarded with results against teams within that county counting towards that title. This basically was a decider for that. A dropped goal from Donavan after 7 minutes and a penalty goal by Farrar on 35 minutes had put Oldham into a 4-0 lead by half time. Wigan's George Hesketh suffered concussion and although he returned "he never regained his real form". Tom Woods was then Sent Off with 14 minutes to go and although Jim Sullivan kicked a penalty goal late on to half the score, Wigan never got a chance to draw it level.
