The sun was out and Wigan started like a train in the second league against
the Saints. Just 9 minuets had gone and it was 12-0 to Wigan. with tries from
Furner from a Matthew Johns yes Matthew Johns, American Football style forward
pass. Three minutes later Farrell raced over from an Ade Lam pass, easy peasy
lemon squeezy 12-0, 9 mins gone at this rate we would win 114-0.
The game then turned into a bruising encounter especially when Howard patted
Cunningham on the nose with his elbow and was put on report. And Terry O'Connor
plastered his nose round the other side of his face trying to nut Chris Joynt.
Saints biggest cheers came when the Ref gave a decision to Saints (they did have
a point)
Saints did come back and back with a vengeance with Hoppe ploughing over and
Fairleigh Stretching over to make the scores level. Yours truly a bit worried we
haven't beaten them for ages please don't win again I couldn't stand it.
Good old Wigan shut the Saints up just before half time 9 points in 4
minuets. First Kris Radlinski scored his usual try. Straight from the kick off
Sculthorpe kicked straight into touch. Cheers Paul, Farrell scored from 50
yards. And then with seconds to go Faz scored a drop goal Joe Lydon style from
40 yards half time 21-12.
Saints did come out of the blocks in the second half and only a couple of
great tackles. But is was Farrell who had the first score with a penalty for
Wigan 23-12. Dare I say it we were looking comfortable. Saints were missing Long
and Martyn ( wasn't he supposed to be playing). The next score was going to be
vital.
It was Saints to there credit who came back with Peter Shiels going in the
conversion missed 23-16, 25 mins to go can they stage one of there comebacks.
Wigan were starting to show a bit of raggedness with a couple of needless
penalties. Saints has a try disallowed for a forward pass. Come on lads.
Get in there!!! Chris Chester break pass to Radlinski. Try scored, Farrell
Conversion 29-16. All over.
Saints again wouldn't let it lie and Fairleigh scored a good individual try
Sculthorpe conversion 29-22, Can they make a game of it?
The tension mounted and the video ref gave Newlove a try Conversion made it
29-28. Let battle commence
Wigan had just gone they stopped playing, stopped tackling they though like I
did the game was won. You don't think like this with these boys. The gladiators
were locking horns. Nothing given, tackles flying in. What a fantastic game.
Then disaster Wellens take passed to Sullivan try!!! no What a tackle from Brian
Carney, we are still in front. What next ?. Next was he refereeing decision that
could have changed the game and gave Saints the Match Neil Cowie on the last
tackle was offside. Never in a month of Sundays. Thank God Sculthorpe missed.
But it was all Saints at the end Joynt made the vital mistake was that the last
chance 90 seconds to go. 45 seconds to go Saints with the ball - forward pass
All over hooter goes.
I am off to have a cardiac.!!!!
