Having lost both the league and Challenge Cup to St
Helens, Wigan at least ended the season with a trophy in this Premiership
Final at Old Trafford. It proved to be a tight first half. Gary Connolly's
blistering try had Wigan 4-0 up in ten minutes but Saints responded with a
score from Paul Newlove soon after. That made it 6-4 but Shaun Edwards try
in the 21st Minute restored Wigan's lead and two tries from Danny Ellison
extended it to 18-8 by half time. Saints did respond after the interval with
a try from Tommy Martyn making it 18-14 but Simon Haughton crossed on 52
minutes to make it 22-14. Then just after the hour Henry Paul romped to the
line for 28-14 and the game was pretty much decided. Late on Jason Robinson
and Craig Murdock added tries before Ellison completed his hat-trick right
on the hooter.
