Saints hadn't lost all season and knew that they could go
five points clear top if they beat Wigan in this derby at Central Park.
Wigan knew they had to win to bring the lead back down to just one point, so
the stakes were high. Things looked ominous when a break from Danny Arnold
sent Bobbie Goulding over for a third minute lead and he soon added a drop
goal for 7-0. But Wigan settled after Rob Smyth's 19th Minute try and by the
25th Minute it was 16-7 after Jason Robinson scored twice. A penalty goal
made it 18-7 before a length of the field score between Gary Connolly, Shaun
Edwards and eventual finisher Inga Tuigamala made it 22-7 at half time. A
superb try from Paul Newlove quickly made it 22-13 after the interval but on
55 minutes, a wonderful break from Robinson was brilliantly supported by
Craig Murdock who finished under the posts for 28-13. A penalty made it
30-13 before Simon Haughton's 67th Minute try and a 69th Minute drop goal by
Jason Robinson wrapped up the win. Chris Morley's late score for Saints was
just a consolation.
