The fitness of Andy Gregory was Wigan's biggest sweat ahead of Wembley but although not 100% fit, he was picked to make what turned out to be his last appearance for the club. Martin Offiah had never played in the Cup Final before this appearance but made up for lost time quickly with a 5th Minute dribble towards the line that he touched down for a 6-0 lead. Great work from Martin Dermott sent Shaun Edwards over near the posts for 12-0 but it was the three minutes before half time that Wigan produced the dagger. First Joe Lydon hammered a drop goal for 13-0 and right on half time, Offiah claimed his second by winning the race to a perfectly weighted long range kick from Edwards. That was 19-0 and although Cas got quickly back to 19-6 within four minutes of the restart, Steve Hampson's try on the hour made it 25-6 and despite Cas scoring a second try, the clock had beaten then and Wigan eased home with a penalty from Botica and a second drop goal for Lydon. That completed Wigan's fifth Challenge Cup success in a row.
