With Salford having beaten Wigan in both league and Regal Trophy at The Willows earlier in the season, their was high anticipation for a hat-trick here in the Challenge Cup.  So much so, the BBC had chosen the tie to be televised on Grandstand but it ended up being postponed on it's original date due to frost and they showed Leeds v Ryedale-York instead. A second attempt to get the game on in midweek failed and with Wigan due to travel to Australia to play in the Sydney World Sevens the next weekend, the RFL insisted this game be played. If not at The Willows then Manchester City's heated Maine Road ground was mooted but that didn't materialise because The Willows was declared fit. In the end their was "little danger" of Salford winning again with Wigan controlling the match throughout. It was a fortunate first try though with Shaun Edwards scoring from a clearly forward pass by Martin Offiah. Then a long pass from Joe Lydon got Frano Botica for a 10-0 half time lead. That lead was extended in the 47th Minute when good work from Martin Dermott got Denis Betts in and although Salford scored next to reduce the score to 16-6, Joe Lydon's try on the hour settled the tie.
