Wigan were back at The Willows where they had lost in the league just 17 days earlier. The home side showed that their league victory was no fluke by dispatching Wigan out of the Regal Trophy in front of the BBC Grandstand cameras. This though was far more remarkable than the league victory because Salford had to fight back from a 12-4 half time deficit. Wigan had taken the lead when Denis Betts' offload got Shaun Edwards over and Frano Botica kicked for 6-0. A try from Cruickshank reduced that lead to 6-4 before on 25 minutes, Wigan got some luck with their second try. Botica was lining up a penalty goal shot but his effort hit the post and Dean bell scored from the rebound. Botica then converted for a 12-4 lead held until half time. Salford's comeback was immediate and by the 51st Minute then went 14-12 up after tries from Birkett and Evans. Botica made it 14-14 with a penalty goal on 61 minutes but Salford soon scored again through Hadley and a touchline conversion from Birkett made it 20-14. That lead was sweated on until a second try from Evans was scored only in stoppage time.
