Leeds hadn't won at Central Park since beating an already relegated Wigan 20-12 in April 1980, so this was a sweet one for the Lioners. The match was played in the evening for Sky coverage and the scoreboard got ticking when a beautiful kick from Garry Schofield allowed Phil Ford to score for a 6-0 lead. Simon Irving converted but was made to take the kick again when the clock had failed to re-start. He nailed the difficult kick a second time though for 6-0. Ford then scored a second try under the posts after a poor error by Kelvin Skerrett and the easy conversion helped Leeds into a 12-0 lead by half time. Next try was obviously going to be a big one in the second half and a brilliant 75 metre return by John Bentley saw it, and the match, go Leeds way with Schofield kicking a late drop goal to polish their superb performance. 21 errors by Wigan, compared to just seven by Leeds, perhaps summed up this Wigan effort most. It was the first time they'd been nilled in a league match at Central Park since a 13-0 loss to Castleford in January 1979.
