Summary: |
Saints had some horrible memories from recent derbies but
headlines like "nightmare exorcised" highlighted their relief and joy in
winning this Lancashire Cup Tie. The first half performance laid the
platform but although it was 14-0 to Saints at the break, it was more their
defence that created that. After Paul Forber had scored a try to give Saints
an early lead, Wigan had piled pressure on them most of the first half until
Saints counter attacked for two tries from first Gary Connolly and then Mike
Riley in the six minutes before half time. 14-0 down, Wigan had been reeling
from that burst but found a way back into the game with Sam Panapa scoring a
solo try on 48 minutes. A quick response try from Bernard Dwyer settled
Saints back down and left Wigan with too much to do. Saints added four
further points to their lead with two drop goals and although Wigan found
tries from Gus O'Donnell and Billy McGinty, Anthony Sullivan wrapped up the
Saints win. |
