With the Challenge Cup added to the League, Lancashire
Cup and Regal Trophy, Wigan now had two games in the Premiership to win and
complete "The Grand Slam". Their quest began with the visit of Castleford
this Semi Final which was a repeat of the match Wigan needed to win to
clinch the title at Central Park three weeks earlier. The visitors took the
lead with a 6th Minute Lee Crooks penalty goal but Frano Botica quickly
responded for 2-2. That score held until the half hour when Wigan went in
twice up to half time. First Andy Farrell's good work got Shaun Edwards over
before he himself took a great pass from Andrew Farrar. Both tries being
converted made it 14-2 at the break. Cas got back to 14-8 when a penalty try
was awarded to them because Botica had tackled Tony Smith before he received
a pass from Tawera Nikau. Wigan though found a try from Mike Forshaw to go
20-8 up and late on Martin Offiah went over and Botica added a drop goal to
send Wigan to the Old Trafford Final.
