This was Wigan's 29th Challenge Cup victory in a row but never in that run had they sweated like this tie at Halifax. On a freezing cold snowy day, Halifax pressured Wigan from the off, taking the lead with a 5th Minute try from centre Graeme Hallas. A try from Dean Bell later made it 6-4 with Frano Botica adding a penalty later for a 6-6 half time scoreline. Eight Minutes after the interval, Halifax went back in front with Greg Austin scoring and Paul Bishop converting for 12-6. He then added a penalty goal for 14-6. Sam Panapa's try got Wigan back to 14-12 but Halifax got a third try from Hallas, his second of the game, for 18-12 but the missed conversion by Bishop would prove so, so costly in the end. Wigan got level in the 71st Minute when a dreadful collision in defence between Warren Wilson and Mark Preston allowed Joe Lydon to nick in for an equalising try after Botica converted. The home side more than deserved a draw but their hearts were broken when Lydon nailed a big drop goal with 36 seconds to go to get Wigan home with the win. Fair to say they got away with this one though.
