Whilst Wigan had the joy of knocking Saints out the
Challenge Cup the previous Saturday, it did mean they now had just the
league to concentrate on knowing Wigan would face at least four extra games
(two league games in hand, plus up to two cup ties) than Saints between now
and the league season climax on Easter Monday. This Wednesday Night was a
big night in the race with Saints away at Widnes and Wigan over in
Humberside to play Hull at The Boulevard. A Great Britain Under 21
International taking place at Rochdale this same night which stretched
squads further. Wigan had Paul Atcheson, Barrie-Jon Mather, Jason Robinson
and Mick Cassidy involved in that match whilst Saints were without Chris Joynt.
Wigan though had no drama in seeing off Hull but Saints going down 26-8 at
Widnes was not only a costly two points lost for them but the two results
saw a big swing in the points difference.
