Summary:l

Only three Preliminary Round ties were drawn and Wigan were amongst those six sides to have drawn the short straw. To have an all first division tie like this one, including holders Wigan, in the Preliminary Round sparked uproar in the press, who had long since grown tired and despised of this extra round. Particularly when you bared in mind that teams like Nottingham, Chorley and Highfield were straight into Round 1!

Not only did it mean an extra cup tie, it also meant the postponement of league fixtures on top, Wigan having been due to host Wakefield on this day. Wigan would lose another league game a week later against Leeds, whilst playing in the Regal Final, so this was not what Wigan needed. Also Leeds had refused Wigan's idea to bring that league fixture forward to the previous weekend which had seen them have another game postponed due to that weekends opponent Bradford playing in Regal Trophy Semi Final. But you could understand Leeds decision because Wigan's idea who have been for them to play on the Friday on Sky at Warrington before hosting Wigan just two days later on the Sunday. As it turned out, this would be the last season that a Preliminary Round was held in not only the Challenge Cup, but also the Regal Trophy as well.
