Summary:
With the switch to summer rugby imminent, this
would be the last competitive Boxing Day Wigan v Saints derby. Wigan's shock
loss to Oldham had opened up a big opportunity for Saints to win the title
but they blew their chance really by losing away at Castleford on December
20th. So instead of a big top of the table clash, Saints were forgetting
about the league and claiming injuries ahead of Regal Trophy Semi Final against
Warrington just four days later. So the last Christmas derby was basically
ruined by Saints playing a full reserve team. Despite the weak side, Saints did well for 20 minutes
but were ultimately demolished by a far superior Wigan side. Scott Quinnell
scored four tries and for some reason Neil Cowie laid into Andy Haigh to get
sent off with ten minutes to go.
