No one was being relegated in this final shortened winter season but Oldham were second bottom and expected to offer no problems to a Wigan side that had only been beaten by Leeds at the top. But the match unravelled for Wigan as it went along. Already without Shaun Edwards, the loss of replacement Craig Murdock with a pulled hamstring in the 19th Minute disrupted things further. Wigan led 20-12 at the break after tries from Scott Quinnell (2), Martin Offiah and Simon Haughton. Oldham though had hit back with two scores from Afi Leuila. who was Inga Tuigamala's brother in law. Oldham found the momentum second half with tries from Gary Burns and Chris McKinney giving them the lead. Wigan then looked like they had snatched the victory with Offiah's second try four minutes from time putting them 26-22 ahead but in first half stoppage time, Martin Crompton scored and the conversion  by Francis Maloney gave Oldham a shock victory.
