Wigan had announced earlier in the day that they wouldn't be re-signing Frano Botica, who was due to return to the club after finishing the ARL season with Auckland Warriors. The reason was because they already had a replacement in 21 year old Nigel Wright and he showed his potential with two tries scored in this 52-20 rout of Sheffield in Wigan's league opener at Central Park. Wright opened the scoring in the 5th Minute but Sheffield fought back to lead 8-6 after a try from Ryan Sheridan and a couple of goals from David Mycoe. Sheffield though were left to rue a stupid dissent penalty conceded by Lynton Stott because Wigan got momentum from that to lead 26-8 by half time. Tries from Jason Robinson and Martin Offiah within three minutes of the re-start pushed Wigan on and although Sheffield found two tries later, Wigan hit the 50 point mark in the end.

Half Time:l

Wigan 26 Sheffield 8

Karl Kirkpatrick (Warrington)
