Summary:

Leeds had played twice since Wigan's last league game and had suffered another blow to their title hopes with a 31-20 home defeat to St Helens. They had recovered to beat Bradford 30-10 at Odsal but Wigan still held a three point lead at the top with now two games in hand. That meant that this midweek slip at Halifax was nothing more than a minor inconvenience to Wigan. Despite Shaun Edwards being sin binned, Wigan took the lead with a Gary Connolly try for 4-0 but by half time Halifax, led by impressive young hooker Paul Rowley, were dominating Wigan with a try from John Bentley being added to by four goals from John Schuster for 12-4. Early in the second half, that lead became 18-4 with Mark Preston scoring against his old club and Schuster converting. Wigan looked lacklustre all match and the two tries from Edwards, both converted by Botica, came far too late.
