Wigan were aiming to reach Wembley for the eight year in
a row and found no match from Oldham in this Semi Final. In fact it was such
a one sided game the press were reflecting on how boring Wigan's domination
of the sport was becoming and how fans were "voting with their feet" in
terms of the attendance. The scoring was opened with an 8th Minute try from
Denis Betts and "the score might have been stratospheric" by half time but
was instead "a modest 20-4" after further Wigan tries from Gary Connolly,
Shaun Edwards and a second for Betts. Wigan "let rip" second half with
Connolly finishing with a hat-trick on top of further scores from Inga
Tuigamala (2) and Barrie-Jon Mather. That had Wigan 48-4 up but Oldham
managed to score three tries in the final quarter with Adrian Belle, getting
his second of the match, Ian Sherratt and David Bradbury scoring.
