Wigan had used their game in hand to go three points clear of Leeds in the midweek and we're looking to push home their advantage on this trip to mid table Salford who were playing their first game with newly appointed player-coach Andy Gregory. They would have to do it though without Martin Offiah, Frano Botica, Phil Clarke, Jason Robinson and Shaun Edwards. Craig Murdock got the nod to start at Scrum Half and opened the scoring before two tries from Gary Connolly and three goals from Henry Paul made it 18-0. Salford hit back though before half time with a try from Mark Lee and two goals from Gary Tyrer making it 18-8.

The after match headlines were grabbed by 49th Minute substitute Sean Long who's "pace and distribution" helped Wigan push on second half with further tries from Inga Tuigamala, Paul Atcheson, Mick Cassidy and Kris Radlinski. Long kicked two goals after being passed the kicking duties late in the game. The victory was job done for Wigan but made even better afterwards with news of Leeds losing 31-22 away at Sheffield Eagles. This meant Wigan had gone from 1 point ahead to 5 within the space of five days.

Half Time:
