Summary:

Widnes were not the team they had been a few years earlier but the BBC were still in attendance for this tie of the round at Naughton Park. That decision looked a great one when tries from Karle Hammond and Craig Makin saw Widnes take a 10-0 lead after just ten minutes! They'd also had a try chalked off for a forward pass but Wigan settled down with a 14th Minute effort from Martin Offiah after good work from Gary Connolly and Shaun Edwards. Then on the next set, Wigan had the lead off of a sudden with Offiah's overhead pass sent Martin Hall in for a score. So Wigan found themselves 12-10 up and the only other scores before half time were a penalty goal apiece, first Botica then Adrian Hadley for Widnes. That slender 14-12 lead for Wigan held all the way until the 66th Minute when Edwards and Phil Clarke combined to send Denis Betts in for the 100th try of his career. Botica converted for 20-12 and the tie was sealed with a 73rd Minute try from Neil Cowie.
