Wigan had not lost in 37 Challenge Cup ties since 1987 so
this draw was seen by many as a "moral victory" for St Helens. They probably
deserved to win the tie in truth with Wigan being grateful for the draw in
the end. Saints had taken the lead with a try from Ian Pickavance inside two
minutes but Va'aiga Tuigamala's sixth minute try levelled the scores up at
6-6. Bobbie Goulding kicked Saints into an 8-6 lead before an Alan Hunte try
in the 18th Minute put them 12-6 ahead. That score held until half time. It
was a hard slog for Wigan to come back in the rain on a heavy pitch but a
try from Denis Betts levelled the scores on 48 minutes after Botica
converted. Goulding kicked Saints back ahead with a penalty and added a drop
goal for 15-12. Then amazingly prop Pickavance kicked a second drop goal for
16-12. Less than ten minutes remained now but to the relief of the Central
Park faithful good work from Martin Offiah was finished by Martin Hall in
the left corner to level the scores at 16-16. Botica couldn't convert so
Saints went hunting a third drop goal but Goulding's attempt on 76 minutes
rebounded off the post. Time ran out and the sides would have to meet in a
replay at Knowsley Road in the midweek.
