The RFL's decision to hold the Regal Trophy Final at the
new McAlpine Stadium in Huddersfield allowed the final to go ahead with the
stadiums heated pitch counteracting the snow on the ground outside. Wigan
were looking to exorcise their 33-2 defeat in this final to Castleford the
year before and quickly went about it by building up a 16-0 lead in 17
minutes. Either side of penalty goals from Frano Botica, Inga Tuigamala
scored a try and then Botica got a four pointer himself with two conversions
also. On 25 Minutes Gary Connolly scored for 22-0 but Warrington would hit
back with a Mark Forster try in the 34th Minute for 22-4. Wigan though were
notorious in this era for scoring pivotal tries right on half time and
Tuigamala's second in the 40th Minute made it 28-4 at the break. Only a
penalty goal was scored second half until the 68th Minute when Forster's
second try made it 30-10. Wigan responded though to finish the deal with a
break down the right by Botica eventually seeing Barrie McDermott score.
Martin Offiah wrapped it up with a last minute try for 40-10.
