Two weeks after a thrilling Boxing Day contest between
the sides at Knowsley Road, the Regal Trophy draw led to a repeat at Central
Park in the Quarter Finals. Amazingly the BBC didn't chose to show this tie,
instead picking Leeds at home to trophy holders Castleford. No Wigan v Saints derby, friendlies
aside, has been without television coverage since this day. Saints had taken an early lead with a Steve Prescott
try but two tries from Henry Paul helped Wigan lead 16-8 at the break.
Saints got back to 16-14 with a try from Alan Hunte and then penalty goals
were exchanged first by Botica for 18-14 and then Goulding for 18-16. This
slender margin was sweated on until Kelvin Skerrett crashed over in the 75th
Minute to send Wigan into a 24-16 lead after Botica converted. Time still
remained for Skerrett to be sent off for punching Sonny Nickle who had
earlier been sin binned for doing likewise to him. This was looking pretty
costly when Dave Lyon scored for 24-22 but it would prove to be only a
