Summary:

Two weeks after a thrilling Boxing Day contest between the sides at Knowsley Road, the Regal Trophy draw led to a repeat at Central Park in the Quarter Finals. Amazingly the BBC didn't chose to show this tie, instead picking Leeds at home to trophy holders Castleford. No Wigan v Saints derby, friendlies aside, has been without television coverage since this day. Saints had taken an early lead with a Steve Prescott try but two tries from Henry Paul helped Wigan lead 16-8 at the break. Saints got back to 16-14 with a try from Alan Hunte and then penalty goals were exchanged first by Botica for 18-14 and then Goulding for 18-16. This slender margin was sweated on until Kelvin Skerrett crashed over in the 75th Minute to send Wigan into a 24-16 lead after Botica converted. Time still remained for Skerrett to be sent off for punching Sonny Nickle who had earlier been sin binned for doing likewise to him. This was looking pretty costly when Dave Lyon scored  for 24-22 but it would prove to be only a consolation.
