This was a great derby in which Wigan snatched the
victory from the jaws of defeat. They had dominated the first half with
tries from Shaun Edwards and Denis Betts helping them to a 14-2 lead before
Henry Paul was sent off having been adjudged by referee Russell Smith to
have tripped Steve Prescott. That was an automatic red card in those days
but Wigan still found another try before half time from Va'aiga Tuigamala
for a 20-2 half time lead. Saints though were rampant after the break and
within three and half minutes had scored twice through Dave Lyon and Tommy
Martyn to make it 20-14. Wigan were reeling and it got worse when they were
reduced to 11 men for ten minutes with a "Holding Down" sin bin for Gary
Connolly. Wigan hung in well for a while despite being two men down, but a
break from Martyn for his second try on 62 minutes finally levelled the game
up at 20-20 after Bobbie Goulding converted. More sin bins followed but it
was at least one from each side this time but a drop goal from Goulding put
Saints ahead 21-20 with 11 minutes to go. Two minutes later Anthony Sullivan
was sent over in the left corner but Goulding's failure to convert would
prove costly in the end. They held a 25-20 lead but a mistake soon after the
kick off from Steve Prescott was quickly punished with Tuigamala rampaging
under the posts for his second try. Botica's kick put Wigan back in front at
26-25 and they found some energy from somewhere to soon score another from
Martin Offiah and they won 32-25 in the end.
