With Wigan playing in the Friday Sky Fixture, they were hoping to go four clear at the top before the other teams played on the Sunday, but they had to battle hard for the two points at Hull. They also had to play without Shaun Edwards was suspended following a red card for Great Britain in the first test against Australia at Wembley the weekend before. So youngster Craig Murdock played at Scrum Half and it was a perfect start with good work from Denis Betts and Barrie McDermott helping set up a try for Martin Hall. Andy Farrell converted for 6-0. But Hull would go on to dominate the rest of the half. Terry Smirk kicked penalties in the 11th and 14th minutes to make it 4-4 but couldn't convert tries that followed from Jez Cassidy and Paul Sterling. Hull's 12-6 lead was reduced to 12-10 with Farrell kicking penalty goals either side of half time. By the hour, Martin Offiah had crossed twice within five minutes but missed conversions left Wigan just 18-12 up. That scored held until the 76th Minute when Joe Lydon, who'd only come on from the bench two minutes earlier, kicked a drop goal that made it 19-12 and sealed the victory.
