Summary:l

Even though he'd just completed a league and cup double, the board met John Dorahy on the Tuesday prior to this Premiership Trophy tie to discuss his future. On the Wednesday it was announced he'd been sacked for "Gross Misconduct". Dorahy responded by telling the press "I have no idea what they are talking about, they have refused to tell me what this gross misconduct amounts to." The story goes that he had an "heated exchange" with chairman Jack Robinson on the bus back from Wembley and was sacked there and then.

All this meant Wigan entered the end of season Premiership Trophy competition with temporary coach Graeme West in charge. His side had to come from behind to progress, after early tries from Ian Pickavance and Alan Hunte had put Saints into a 12-0 lead, but a try from Martin Offiah just before half time brought Wigan back to 12-6 and they levelled with Mick Cassidy touching down Andy Farrell's kick soon after the interval. Saints went back ahead 16-12 with a Tommy Martyn try but as so often happen in this era, they wilted in the final quarter. Another try for Offiah, two for Shaun Edwards and one for Denis Betts saw Wigan win 34-16 in the end.
