Va'aiga Tuigamala, or "Inga the Winger" as he had been
branded, had been in the country for a month but his appearance to debut
here at Widnes was still quite a shock because the club had been promising
to play him first at Central Park against Wakefield in 12 days time. It took
him nine minutes to get his first touch but putting prop David Smith on his
backside in the process set the tone for him for sure. Widnes though took
the lead in the 13th Minute with Paul Hulme sending David Ruane over for a
8-0 lead after Bobbie Goulding converted and soon later added a penalty
goal. A great burst from Andy Platt saw him score to get Wigan back to 8-6
after 21 minutes and four minutes after that Paul Atcheson's well timed run
got him over for a 10-8 Wigan lead after Botica missed his kick. In the 36th
Minute that lead would become far stronger with good work from Nigel Wright
allowing Sam Panapa to get under the posts for a 16-8 half time lead.
The first try of the second half was now set up to be a
big one and Gary Connolly claimed it in the 47th Minute. Botica's missed
conversion kept Widnes within two scores and when Karle Hammond scored in
the 64th Minute that lead was down to 20-12 but crucially Goudling couldn't
convert. That score held for the next ten minutes and the only real threat
Wigan had against them was a break from Christian Tyrer but Atcheson
superbly tackled him into touch. In the 76th Minute, Botica kicked a drop
goal for 21-12 and a couple of minutes later the performance was polished
with a try for debut boy Inga who crashed over from Andy Farrell's pass.
