When the draw was made, Wigan were not expected to be troubled by Wakefield in this Challenge Cup tie but after Wigan's 33-2 humbling to Castleford in the previous weekend's Regal Trophy Final, the nerves were on display all afternoon here. This wasn't helped by them going behind early to an 70 metre Andy Mason interception try for a 6-0 Wakefield lead. Wigan clawed back slowly to lead 12-6 at half time with Frano Botica kicking three penalty goals and converting Sam Panapa's 18th Minute try.

Three minutes after the interval, Wakefield were level when great work by their New Zealand signing Henry Paul saw Andy Wilson finish a great try that made it 12-12 after Paul himself converted. That score held all the way until the 66th Minute and Central Park wasn't half feeling the nerves. Those were eased though when an error from Matthew Fuller forward pass to no one was intercepted by Nigel Wright for a try against his old club. Then seven minutes from time, Gary Connolly scored and it looked like Wigan had survived this test, though Andy Mason's late try still had them sweating to the end.
