Va'aiga Tuigamla arrived in Wigan on the Thursday prior
to this game and was sat next to coach John Dorahy whilst Wigan were at The
Willows for this Regal Trophy Semi Final against Salford. Like against
Warrington in their previous match, Wigan took an early lead with Shaun
Edwards latching on to his own kick in the sixth minute. Frano Botica was
absent, so Andy Farrell converted for 6-0. Steve Blakeley reduced that to
6-2 with a penalty in the 19th Minute but Farrell kicked Wigan back to a six
point lead 27 minutes. However soon after that, Salford got a try with Andy
Gregory's long pass allowing Peter Williams to get Phil Ford over.
Conversion was missed but Wigan's lead was now just 8-6. Salford were
pressing for more in the 39th Minute but Jason Robinson collected Gregory's
kick and began a long return down field that saw him combine with Gary
Connolly and Martin Offiah for a try. Conversion was missed but Wigan led
12-6 at the break.
Salford levelled in the second half with Gregory finding
Andy Burgess on the burst and he sent Bob Marsden under the posts. Easy
conversion made it 12-12 and when Joe Lydon was sin binned in the 60th
Minute, things looked ominous for Wigan. Steve Blakeley missed the resulting
penalty though and later Gregory hit the post with a drop goal attempt.
Those would be costly misses with Andy Farrell later booting Wigan back
ahead at 14-12. The tie was only wrapped up with Barrie-Jon Mather's
stoppage time try.
