Summary:
Warrington had returned to the top of the table with
victory over Widnes on December 27th, so this was a big game with Wigan
being in second place. Wigan got off to the perfect start with a Martin
Offiah try after just 5 minutes but the conversion was missed by Frano
Botica. He later added a penalty goal for a 6-0 half time lead. In the
second half a Jonathan Davies penalty reduced the lead to 6-2. Later a good
passing move between John Thursfield, Greg Mackey, Mike Gregory and Lee
Penny got Mark Forster over in the right corner but Davies couldn't convert,
so the scores were tied at 6-6. It was a tight finish and that scored looked
to be how it would finish until Warrington chucked away a vital league point
in the fourth minute of stoppage time. They had possession but Mike Gregory
knocked on. Phil Clarke pounced on the loose ball only for Paul Cullen to
tackle him knees first. Penalty was awarded and then marched ten metres
further forward by referee Russell Smith after dissent from Davies. Despite
having a rare dodgy day with the boot, Botica kicked the penalty and Wigan
had won to go back top of the table.
