Summary:
Warrington came into this Regal Trophy Quarter Final
leading the league table and on a nine match winning streak. Wigan were in
second place and re-affirmed their superiority of recent years with a good
victory. The BBC Grandstand cameras were in attendance. The only try of the
first half came after David Elliott was penalised for "roughing" Kelvin
Skerrett. From that a beautifully weighted kick from Frano Botica saw Jason
Robinson get finger tips on it. Later in the first half Frano Botica kicked
a penalty goal for 6-0 at the break before adding a drop goal early second
half. An unconverted try by Paul Stevens then stretched that lead to 11-0
before Warrington got first a penalty goal from Jonathan Davies and then a
converted try by Rob Myler that brought the score down to 11-8.
On the hour, a try from Jason Robinson put Wigan back in
control at 17-8 after good work from Joe Lydon and Sam Panapa. Another
penalty from Davies brought that back to 17-10 but a try from Barrie-Jon
Mather sealed the game and Kelvin Skerrett glossed the performance with a
try three minutes before the end.
