This was a dress rehearsal for the Challenge Cup Final to follow in six days time and both sides rested many of the Wembley faces with Joe Lydon, Kevin Iro, Shaun Edwards, Andy Gregory, and Ellery Hanley all sitting out for Wigan and David Lyon, Des Drummond, Gary Mercer, Paul Darbyshire, Paul Bishop, Duane Mann, Gary Sanderson and Mike Gregory absent from the Warrington team. Wigan had taken a 6-0 lead with a Steve Hampson try but found themselves 20-6 down by the break after tries from Neil Kenyon and a double for Mark Forster. Wigan though rallied early second half with three tries in a four minute spell completing turning the game around. Dean Bell, Andy Goodway and Bobbie Goulding all crossed which put Wigan 22-20 in front. Warrington did recover to re-take the lead at 26-22 with Martin Crompton's try but Goulding narrowed that to 26-24 with a penalty before scoring a try in the final two minutes to ensure Wigan nicked the victory.
