Wigan needed just one point from their final two games to clinch the title but they would have to try again on Easter Monday after losing heavily to St Helens on Good Friday. After a bruising match against title rivals Leeds on the Tuesday, energy and full fitness was in short supply, so much so that Joe Lydon, Kevin Iro, Shaun Edwards, Andy Gregory and Andy Platt were all still absent here and Ellery Hanley didn't make the full 80 either. Saints cashed in, but not until after Wigan had to taken the lead with a 5th minute try from Denis Betts. Efforts from Les Quirk and George Mann had seen Saints recover to 12-6 up at the break and for 15 minutes after half time, Wigan kept in the game. They were eventually broken by a Roy Haggerty drop goal for 13-6 and completely collapsed after that with Quirk completing a hat-trick and further scores coming from Alan Hunte and Mark Bailey. This would be Wigan's worst defeat for ten years with Andy Goodway's try in the second half only being consolation. Wigan could still had won the title had Leeds lost to Featherstone, but their 25-14 win kept their slender hopes alive.
