Summary:l

In a repeat of the previous season's final, Wigan met Saints in the Challenge Cup Semi Finals at Old Trafford in Manchester. This proved to be a very even contest with Wigan having to fight from behind to reach Wembley for the third year in a row. Saints had bombed two early opportunities to open the scoring before a quiet starting Wigan took the lead in the 11th Minute with their first attack of the match. Andy Gregory and Denis Betts combined to get Steve Hampson over in the left corner, but Joe Lydon couldn't convert. Saints quickly hit back with first Paul Loughlin kicking a penalty for 4-2 before Sean Devine's try under the posts put Saints into a 8-4 lead after Loughlin kicked easily. Lydon kicked a goal to reduce that to 8-6 but right on half time great work down the left from Les Quirk saw him get over from 25 metres. Loughlin couldn't convert but Saints led 12-6 at the break.

The second half was much better from Wigan but for a while they only chipped away at Saints lead with two penalty goals from Lydon reducing the score to 12-10. Into the final quarter and Wigan finally went ahead with a good try from Ged Byrne in the right corner but Lydon couldn't convert so the lead was just 14-12. This allowed Loughlin to level the game up with a penalty for 14-14 and the game looked destined for a replay until in the final minute a burst through from Ellery Hanley saw him find Andy Goodway in support to send him under the sticks. Wigan had stolen it and Saints hearts had been cruelly crushed again.
