Summary:
Although they had played a game more, Leeds had
used their Preliminary Round cup exit to Bradford to continue playing games.
This had allowed them to draw level joint top of the table with Wigan, both
sides being on 30 points ahead of this first of two league meetings between
now and the end of the season. Headingley was absolutely packed in
anticipation but it was Wigan who showed their class for the majority of the
game. Both sides exchanged penalty goals before a brilliant one-two between
Shaun Edwards and Andy Gregory created the space for Andy Goodway to break
and send Andy Platt over. Lydon converting for an 8-2 lead. A further
penalty from Lydon and a long, and extremely high, 40 metre drop goal from
Steve Hampson made it 11-2 by the break.
Into
the second half and Wigan swapped Gregory with youngster Bobbie Goulding and
he made a quick impact to score a try and kick the goal for 17-2. Then by
the 55th Minute it was 21-2 with Mark Preston returning an intercept 80
metres to score and it was looking like Wigan would cruise to victory at
21-2. Leeds though would fight back with tries from first David Creasser and
then Vince Fawcett making it 21-14 with still eight minutes to go. It proved
to be too little, too late from Leeds, Wigan had got the vital victory.
