Wigan went four points clear top of the table
with this hard fought home win over Bradford with Martin Dermott grabbing
the headlines. His chip over the top to re-collect himself helped get Ellery
Hanley over for the opening score after 11 Minutes. That proved to be the
only score of the first half. First incident of the second half was referee
John Kendrew limping off to be replaced by touch judge Bill Brown. Bradford
may have been defensively sound but they were offering "almost nothing" in
attack and Wigan would soon find a second try. Combination between Andy
Platt and Kevin Iro got David Marshall over for an 8-0 lead. Dermott then
sealed the victory by touching down his own kick for 12-0. He caused
Bradford problems again later with another great kick but this time Karl
Fairbank took him out and got sent off by the replacement ref with 17
minutes to go. Wigan didn't score any further points, settling for the 12-0
win on a muddy day. Elsewhere, Widnes going down 20-8 at home to Leeds meant
Wigan now had a four point lead at the top.
