Steve Larder 1

The morning of this Regal Trophy Semi Final at Headingley had seen news of Ellery Hanley being awarded the MBE in the New Years Honours list. He didn't make much impact here though, still easing his way back to fitness after a long absence. Wigan took the lead in the 9th Minute when an Andy Gregory grubber kick was touched down by Joe Lydon, to which he converted for 6-0. Then on 14th Minutes it was Lydon himself kicking a bomb in the air. Steve Larder completely messed it up and it rebounded for Denis Betts to score a simple try. Lydon converted and later added a penalty when Mark Preston had been obstructed. That made for a 14-0 half time lead. Wigan pretty much wrapped the tie up soon after the interval with Betts sending Shaun Edwards racing under the posts, Lydon converting for 20-0. Though Castleford hit back next with a try from Steve Larder for 20-6, a well taken try from David Marshall three minutes later slapped them back down at 24-6. St John Ellis scored a late consolation but Wigan were through to a final against Halifax.
