Summary:

This was the first derby since Wigan had humiliated Saints in the infamous 27-0 Wembley spanking, but it got no better for the Knowsley Road outfit here on Boxing Day. The match had been delayed for 25 minutes by Crowd Congestion with the 28,075 crowd being the biggest league attendance recorded since the two division league restructuring had occurred in 1973-74. Wigan took the lead with a Mark Preston try in the 10th minute and added further scores from Dean Bell, David Marshall, Joe Lydon and Shaun Edwards to be 24-0 up at the break, despite missing three of the five conversions. Edwards and his partner in the halves Andy Gregory were having a field day but the pace slowed down after the break. Wigan still found three more tries from Ian Lucas, a second for Preston and Denis Betts. That made it 38-0 with Saints' try from Les Quirk only being a late consolation to avoid being nilled for the second derby in a row.
