Summary:
Champions Widnes visiting Wigan was the dream
cup draw of this Regal Trophy round. The short term contracts of Australians
Phil Blake and Les Davidson had now ended and Wigan also had Ian Lucas and
Ian Gildart absent from the pack. This meant Adrian Shelford and Shaun Wane
got their first starts of the campaign. Wigan took the lead in the 3rd
Minute with a try from Andy Gregory and Shaun Edwards combining to get Andy
Goodway over. It was only 4-0 but Wigan had been dominating the game when in
the 27th Minute, Widnes prop Joe Grima was sent off for a high shot on
Edwards. Just 24 hours earlier the RFL had announced a new policy against
head high tackles and he was the first to cop it. Andy Currier hit the post
trying to halve Wigan's lead but four minutes before half time, Gregory sent
Joe Lydon running towards the line and Alan Tait couldn't stop him. That
made it 10-0 at half time.
BBC Grandstand viewers were now able to watch
the Second Half Live, a half in which Wigan pushed on. Shaun Wane scored a
short range barge over before Mark Preston beat Brimah Kebbie for pace
to score Wigan's fourth try. Lydon only kicked one from four but Wigan were
never really troubled in this excellent 18-0 win.
