Steve Hampson, Shaun Edwards, Andy Platt and Andy Goodway were backing up a day after Great Britain had beaten New Zealand 26-8 in the second test at Headingley. Hampson had been sent off for the first time in his career during that test, for a headbutt on Gary Freeman, and amazingly ended up being sent off again here against Castleford for the second time in 24 hours. Wigan had led 8-0 but found themselves 16-8 behind at half time after a good Castleford comeback. Hampson was then sent off for an alleged trip on Steve Larder as Castleford scored to increase their lead to 22-8 and to top his week off, he also suffered a broken cheekbone. Wigan did fight back with 12 men but ended up losing by two points in the end.
