The curtain raiser to the new season saw champions Widnes face cup holders Wigan at Anfield in Liverpool. It had been a good first half for Wigan, leading 16-7 at the break, but by the 46th Minute Widnes had scored twice to lead 17-16. Widnes kicked on to win 27-22 in the end.
