Wigan were not having a great season and this was perhaps highlighted further with this exit out of the Regal Trophy at the hands of Bradford. Not much happened until the 27th Minute when Wigan took the lead with a try from substitute Andy Goodway. Bradford responded with a superb individual try from ex Wigan loose forward John Pendlebury and the conversion from David Hobbs put the visitors into a 6-4 half time lead. BBC Grandstand were showing the second half Live and got the shock set up for them in the 45th Minute when a chip over the top from Hobbs was finished by Paul Medley under the posts for a 12-4 lead after the conversion. Wigan looked desperate for the rest of the game and only found a penalty goal from Frano Botica in response. To add to the woe of exiting the competition that Wigan had won in both the previous two seasons, the crowd was a "most un-wigan like" 5,285 said one newspaper.
