The Premiership Trophy fixtures were always decided by finishing league positions and Wigan finishing 2nd and Saints 7th meant a repeat dress rehearsal before the sides met at Wembley in the cup final. This game was played just 6 days before Wembley with both sides resting players who would be in their Wembley sides a week later. Wigan had Dean Bell, Joe Lydon, Shaun Edwards, Andy Gregory, Ian Potter and Ellery Hanley absent whilst Saints were without Paul Loughlin, Tony Burke, Darren Bloor and Aussie Loanees Michael O'Connor and Paul Vautin.

Heavy Rain before and during the match made this contest a mud bath and opportunities at a premium. The first score only came in the 35th Minute with a penalty goal from Paul Forber. Wigan equalised on 50 minutes with a penalty from Steve Hampson and that 2-2 score held for the next 15 minutes until Forber put Saints back ahead with a penalty goal for 4-2. Hampson missed two "simple" penalty goals to equalise in the final few minutes but the prospect of a replay would not have appealed greatly I suspect. Saints hung on to progress but it would be sweet revenge for Wigan at Wembley.
