Summary:l

17 days before the sides would meet at Wembley in the Challenge Cup Final, a dress rehearsal was played out in the league at Central Park. The Cup Final was far from Wigan minds though with the title still being up for grabs. Title rivals Widnes were also playing on this evening in a match away at Castleford. At Central Park, Wigan took a 2-0 lead with a Steve Hampson penalty but quickly fell behind with an interception pass by Dean Bell being returned by amateur Alan Hunte 70 metres for a try. Hampson kicked another penalty for 6-4 after Paul Loughlin was sin binned for a high tackle on Ellery Hanley in the 16th minute. The only other first half points came from a Neil Holding drop goal for 7-4 before a third Hampson penalty made it 7-6 at half time. At Castleford it was Widnes who led 12-8 at the break.

In the second half, a fourth penalty from Hampson gave Wigan an 8-7 lead in the 46th minute, and in the 57th Minute Wigan finally found a try with Hanley going under the posts from a scrum. Hampson converted for a 14-7 score and that was defended out in the last quarter. Widnes had hung on to beat Castleford 24-22, which meant they only needed a draw to win the title in the title decider to follow on the Sunday. These two victories meant Leeds were eliminated from the title race.
