Summary:l

Andy Gregory settled his differences with Graeme Lowe in the midweek and withdrew his transfer request. He only returned on the bench though for this John Player Trophy Final against Widnes at Burnden Park in Bolton. This was a tight final with the first score being claimed after Widnes had lost the ball in their own quarter. Shaun Edwards sent Ged Byrne bursting through and his pass back on the inside to Kevin Iro created the finish. Only 4-0 after the conversion was missed. Wigan then gifted Widnes a try themselves in the 13th Minute. Edwards poor pass on half way was gobbled up by Darren Wright for a score near the posts. Andy Currier converted to put Widnes 6-4 ahead after 13 minutes. The only scores for the next 56 minutes of the contest were two Joe Lydon penalty goals that put Wigan 8-6 ahead. Conditions had began to get really muddy and heavy and the match was decided when Andy Gregory, off the bench, sent Ellery Hanley over in the right corner and although the conversion missed, Wigan held on the final ten minutes to win the trophy. Widnes fans consolation was news of Welsh Rugby Union International Jonathan Davies joining them.
