Widnes may have won the championship the previous season but they did so despite failing to beat Wigan in all four meetings across three competitions. So to win this Charity Shield encounter on the Isle of Man was a welcome one for Dougie Laughton's team. Wigan scored the first try in the 15th Minute through Joe Lydon but soon after half time it was Widnes who led 20-4. However, two tries from Tony Iro on 58 and 74 minutes set up a tight finish but Widnes hung on to win.
