On the Tuesday before this game the dispute between coach
Graeme Lowe and Ellery Hanley was officially declared over and Hanley
returned to the team for this Challenge Cup Semi Final. He hadn't played
since mid January but his cause wasn't helped by the fact Wigan won every
game in his absence. This Semi Final at Burnden Park was played in muddy
conditions but Wigan were far superior in mastering them. Tries from Shaun
Edwards and Tony Iro had Wigan 12-0 up by half time and although Salford hit
back for 12-4 soon after the interval but Wigan soon recovered to find more
tries. Nicky Kiss cheekily hacking on an offload from Hanley got them going
before Hanley sent Kevin Iro in for another. Edwards then scored a second
before the last of the six Wigan tries went to that very naughty boy Hanley
after good work from Gill. Wigan comfortably through to Wembley with a 34-4
success.
