Wigan began 1988 looking to recover from a miserable December, that had seen them lose twice in the league and be eliminated form the John Player Trophy by Leeds, against Warrington who were second in the table. It was played an a very rain day, which left a heavy pitch, and the Wilderspool ground was so packed, some supporters were locked outside. They missed a game that would be well remembered for years afterwards but not necessarily for the right reasons.

Brawls marred most of the first half with it being described as "World War Three" or a "Chamber of Horrors" in the press. Adrian Shelford and Les Boyd had already come together at each other in the first minute but it was the eighth minute when the first brawl occurred. Referee Kevin Allatt wasted no time in sending off Shelford and Warrington's Tony Humphries whilst Boyd was also sin binned.

A second incident then erupted in the 20th Minute when Andy Goodway had taken Paul Cullen out off the ball. Cullen lied prostrate on the ground as Goodway became the second Wigan player to be sent off and once he had walked past Cullen on the ground, Cullen got up and subsequently smacked Goodway from behind. The brawl that ensued ended up almost down the tunnel. Cullen ended up being Sent Off as well which meant both sides were now down to 11 men each, Boyd having returned from the sin bin before the second brawl.

After that incident, the game actually settled down into a rugby match, helped by a great solo try from Ellery Hanley that got Wigan 4-0 ahead. However in the ten minutes before half time, Warrington turned the 4-0 deficit into a 13-4 lead with tries from Billy McGinty and Brian Johnson plus two conversions and then a drop goal from John Woods which was kicked right on half time.

So Wigan had work to do second half but in the end considering the half time deficit they would have been happy to battle back for a 15-15 draw. Hanley got a second and Steve Hampson claimed tries with only a penalty goal from Woods being added to the Warrington score.

The disciplinary hearing for the this game was only heard on January 14th. Adrian Shelford was given "Sending Off Sufficient" but both Tony Humphries and Paul Cullen were given two matches suspensions. Andy Goodway meanwhile was suspended for four games. A week later on 20th January both clubs were given record fines of £3,000 each with £500 payable immediately and £2,500 suspended if they steered clear of trouble between then and the end of the season. Maurice Lindsay re-acted by saying "We accept the committee's decision and now want to get on with playing the game". Warrington secretary Ron Close meanwhile offered what was described as a "curious reaction" in one newspaper after he told reporters he had "No Fucking Comment".
